Understanding SEO & How It Works

To start with, what exactly is SEO? SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is the step-by-step process which helps any piece of content within a website rank higher on what ever search engine is being used by the user.

But how can SEO be of benefit to you, and what can you do to implement and manage it? In this blog, we’ll take a look at some key examples of SEO and how you can make use of it for your own business.

ABOUT SEO

The most important thing to know about SEO is that it improves organic ranking, and is therefore different from any advertising that is paid for. Organic refers to the fact that you haven’t paid for your website to have an improved ranking. Search engine optimization is essentially Google, or any other search engine, reviewing the content you have on your website and, if someone was to make a search on the online content you have posted, it is then more likely to show it towards the top of the pile.

Let’s take an example. If someone were to search “gluten free brownies” in Google, the likelihood is they are wanting to make gluten free brownies but need a recipe with instructions, ingredients and so on. So, anyone who wrote a piece of content on gluten free brownies is going to want their article popping up close enough to the top, if not at the top. In theory that’s exactly what SEO marketing is.

Understanding SEO is one thing, but then being able to take that and do something with it requires a lot of time. Its also not something you can grind out and do in one day. This is something has to be worked on over a longer period and results are not going to come immediately. The aim is to improve ranking over time.

One of the most important things about SEO marketing is the content itself. Over the years, Google’s SEO algorithms have improved drastically. If you search “Quick and easy way to make pesto pasta", Google is going to put all its resources into finding you the best recipe that takes as little time as possible, and uses the fewest ingredients. It is not going to just look for the fastest recipe or recommend a load of frozen meal options. It will go out and give you the best option for EXACTLY the content you asked for.

The reasons above are why the quality of your content is so important. Posting a piece of content with relevant key words is crucial when you are creating high quality content, as this makes it a lot easier to rank higher on google searches, and standout.

Coming up with good content is never easy, but luckily you don’t need to always create content from scratch yourself due to the amount of information out there online. You can take inspiration from content posted by others to help benefit and improve your own as long as you are adding more value and not simply plagiarizing, and always ensure to relate your own version of the content back to your company's products or services.
